This eighteenth-century Georgian longcase clock by Cooper and Hedge of Colchester dates to circa 1735 and operates on an eight-day movement with brass-cased weights and a brass pendulum. The black and gold lacquered wooden case exhibits an arch-topped door and base decorated with intricate gilt chinoiserie scenery depicting figures and landscapes, complemented by architectural mouldings, an arched brass dial with Roman numerals, and two spherical gilt brass finials mounted on top. The working key and lock secure the trunk door, which is fitted with a small handle. Standing 238.5 cm high, 50 cm wide and 24 cm deep, the timepiece functions as a statement floor-standing clock suitable for placement in a traditional hallway or living room of an English country house. Positioned upright against a wall, the clock provides timekeeping via its mechanical movement while serving as an imposing vertical wooden feature in an interior. The dark lacquer surface contrasts with the bright metallic details of the dial and the reflective gold artwork across the front elevation. The stepped plinth base anchors the tall structure, leading up through the trunk to the glazed hood enclosing the clock face. The design incorporates classical architectural elements such as the arched pediment and fluted corner columns framing the dial. Regular winding maintains the eight-day cycle of the weights, keeping the mechanism operational for daily use in a domestic setting.

A chinoiserie longcase clock is an 18th-century floor-standing clock encased in wood decorated with lacquered or japanned finishes that depict East Asian-inspired landscapes, figures, and flora.

These clocks typically feature an oak or pine casing coated with built-up layers of lacquer or varnish, detailed with gilt paint or gold leaf, and fitted with brass dials, spandrels, and movement components.

Authentic Georgian examples usually feature hand-engraved brass dials, cast brass corner spandrels, original weight-driven movements, and period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the case.

Place the clock as a focal architectural piece in a hallway, dining space, or drawing room, allowing its verticality to balance contemporary artwork and modern tailored seating.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent the lacquer from cracking; dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid liquid polishes.
