This pair of antique Doulton Lambeth vases from 1880 belongs to the Victorian Arts and Crafts style, constructed from stoneware with a rich salt glaze. The design incorporates slender dark brown necks with flared rims above bulbous cobalt blue bodies. These vessels are richly ornamented with raised mustard-coloured scrollwork swags, interspersed with pale lavender floral motifs and delicate white beaded bands dividing the upper and lower sections. The smooth glaze reflects light evenly across the curved ceramic surfaces, and each vase rests on a stable circular base. Standing at 30.5 cm high, 11 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, they offer a balanced proportion suitable for display. In a contemporary interior, these decorative objects sit well upon a mantelpiece, a sideboard, or a console table, adding traditional Victorian and Gothic character to a living room, study, or hallway as striking decorative accents.

FAQs

Doulton Lambeth stoneware refers to art pottery produced at the Lambeth factory in London during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Renowned for hand-decorated finishes, relief moulding, and salt-glazed stoneware techniques, this pottery became a prominent part of the British Arts and Crafts movement.

Victorian stoneware vases were crafted from dense clay fired at high temperatures, rendering the material non-porous and durable. Artisans applied decorative techniques including tube-lining, hand-carving, impasto floral application, and salt-glazing to achieve rich surface textures.

Authentic pieces feature impressed factory marks on the base, such as the Doulton Lambeth rosette or oval stamp. They frequently contain incised or stamped artist monograms belonging to the specific decorators who finished the object in the Lambeth studios.

Displaying a pair of stoneware vases symmetrically on a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard creates visual structure. The deep cobalt blue and earthy glaze tones contrast effectively against neutral backdrops and dark wood surfaces.

Clean stoneware using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without dulling the surface finish. Avoid harsh chemical agents, abrasive pads, or submerging pieces in water, as moisture can affect areas with delicate raised glaze accents.
