This Victorian Gothic cologne bottle originates from England and dates to 1870. The vessel consists of cranberry glass cased in clear glass with slice-cut panels down the tapering body, a petal-cut rim, and a star-cut base. The object includes an original matching steeple stopper shaped into an elongated pointed spire, a faceted neck, and a flared base rim. The piece stands 24 cm high with an 11 cm diameter at its widest point. In a modern interior, this scent bottle functions as a decorative display item on a bedside table, dressing table, or mantelpiece. The construction provides a sturdy base and a secure closure while maintaining its original finish and colour scheme.

Cranberry glass gained immense popularity during the Victorian era, crafted by adding gold chloride to molten glass to produce its distinctive rich red colouration. These bottles were designed primarily for dressing tables to hold scented oils, cologne, or perfume.

Artisans created these bottles using hand-blown glass, often layering clear glass with coloured casing before hand-cutting geometric facets through the coloured layer to reveal clear glass underneath. Stoppers were individually hand-ground to create an airtight fit for the bottle neck.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit slight hand-worked variations, sharp hand-cut facets, a polished pontil mark on the base, and occasional minute air bubbles trapped within the glass. Additionally, the stopper and neck usually share hand-fitted grind marks.

Place the bottle on a mirrored vanity tray, an open bathroom shelf, or a deep window sill where natural light can pass through the tinted glass. Grouping it alongside brass accents or varied glassware heightens its visual impact.

Clean delicate glass using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, hot water, or dishwashers which can fracture historical glass. Ensure the piece is dry before inserting the stopper to prevent internal moisture accumulation.
