It must have been commissioned by someone with good taste and deep pockets!

This George III Cuban mahogany nightstand stands from the 18th century as a functional bedside table built in an English country house style. The piece uses rich brown Cuban mahogany, wainscot oak drawer linings, and a brass ring handle, displaying a polished finish with visible wood grain. Design elements include tiered shelves, turned column supports, scalloped aprons under the top and drawer, and carved claw and ball feet. The nightstand measures 77.5 cm high, 36.2 cm wide, and 36.2 cm deep. In a modern home, this bedside table functions practically next to a bed or at the end of a sofa to provide surface space and enclosed storage via its central drawer. The structure allows it to fit neatly into compact spaces while offering two tiers of display shelves. The configuration accommodates everyday items on the upper surface and middle shelf, keeping living areas orderly and refined.

Originating during the reign of King George III from 1760 to 1820, these pieces served as versatile bedside tables or washstands crafted from dense imported mahogany, often incorporating open galleries, turned supports, and drawers.

Cuban mahogany was heavily favoured during the 18th century for its dense grain and rich hue, complemented by hand-turned timber legs, brass drop handles, and hand-cut joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber undersides, period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, original cast brass hardware, and natural timber patination from age.

Positioned alongside a bed or arranged in a living room alcove, it functions as an occasional side table, layered with contemporary lighting, art, or ceramics.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain, while avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity.
