This seventeenth-century oak panelled coffer is a rustic farmhouse storage box built with traditional pegged construction and tall stile legs. The piece is finished in a warm brown colour with a natural grain texture, and features twin panelled sections on the front and lid, a central iron escutcheon with a teardrop drop-plate, and visible wood peg fixings. The proportion measures 99.5 cm wide by 57.7 cm high and 44 cm deep, offering compact storage. Inside the hinged lid, the box includes a fitted candle box, supported by wire hinges and secured by the original lock and keeper. The sturdy timber construction and time-worn finish suit placement in a hallway, bedroom, or living space as a functional storage chest and accent table.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Common during the Jacobean and Carolean eras, these chests featured panelled construction and hinged lids to store linens, clothing, and household valuables.

Traditional coffers were primarily built from solid European oak due to its durability. Construction involved hand-hewn timber, wooden dowels or pegs, and wrought iron hardware such as lock plates, strap hinges, and escutcheons.

Authentic period coffers display signs of hand-tooling, such as adze marks on unexposed surfaces, irregular peg placements, and natural timber shrinkage across the grain. Original ironwork, authentic patination in recessed areas, and hand-cut mouldings also indicate age.

An antique oak coffer functions effectively as a coffee table, hallway bench, or storage unit at the foot of a bed. Its architectural structure and rich timber tones provide contrast against minimalist plaster walls or modern soft furnishings.

Preservation requires regular dusting and an annual application of high-grade beeswax polish to protect the timber. The chest should be kept away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent excessive timber movement or cracking.
