This French circular bedside cabinet dates from the early 20th century, around 1930, in the French Chateau style. The piece is constructed from warm brown kingwood veneers, complemented by ebony and satinwood chequer banding, gilt bronze ormolu mounts, handles, and a brass gallery rim. Three drawers sit one above another on the front, fitted with ornate handles and flanked by ormolu mounts, while the whole structure stands upon slender cabriole legs terminating in bronze sabots. The round top features an inlaid quattro panel design, and the sides incorporate framed panels centred with decorative ormolu masks. It stands 75 cm high with a diameter of 32 cm. Today, this compact item functions well as a practical side table, lamp table, or decorative bedside cabinet within a bedroom or living space, offering useful storage alongside traditional antique character.

FAQs

Circular bedside cabinets, traditionally known in France as tables de chevet or chiffonnieres, gained popularity in the 18th century during the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Designed to hold personal items near the bed, these compact pieces often featured fine marquetry, gilt-bronze mounts, and marble or gallery tops.

Traditional French cabinets of this style feature a solid wood framework finished with exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood. They are frequently decorated with cast brass or bronze mounts, known as ormolu, and topped with gallery rims or marble surfaces.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, hand-chased brass or bronze mounts, and secondary woods like oak or pine used for internal drawer construction. Look for signs of age-appropriate patina, original lock mechanisms, and hand-planed surfaces on the cabinet back.

A French circular cabinet functions well as an accent table in a living room, an elegant nightstand in a bedroom, or a focal piece in a hallway. Pairing the warm timber tones and brass details with neutral upholstery and contemporary lighting creates a balanced scheme.

Preserve veneer by keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or lifting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and protect the brass mounts from excessive oxidisation.
