German Edwardian Musical Alarm Carriage Mantel Clock – Ornate Gilt & Silvered Case C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome and unusual antique German musical carriage alarm clock, dating to circa 1900, from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period.

This attractive clock features an architectural silver-toned metal case with an elaborately embossed gilt-coloured front panel, beautifully decorated with scrolling foliage and intricate ornamental detailing surrounding the circular dial.

The traditional Roman numeral dial incorporates two subsidiary registers: a seconds dial positioned at 12 o'clock and a separate 12-hour alarm-setting dial at 6 o'clock.

Of particular interest is the mechanical musical alarm mechanism, a fascinating feature of these early German clocks. The clock is key-wound and retains its winding key, which is stored within the hinged rear access compartment.

The case features glazed side panels allowing views of the intricate mechanical movement, a decorative overhanging top, carrying handle and substantial stepped base.

Historical Interest

Research has identified closely comparable German musical alarm clocks dating to around 1900, including an example preserved in the Museums Victoria collection in Australia.

Similar clocks were produced by established German manufacturers including Friedrich Mauthe and Badische Uhrenfabrik (BADUF), both associated with early German mechanical clockmaking. The precise manufacturer of this example has not been positively established.

Working Condition

The clock has been tested and is ticking, with the subsidiary seconds hand operating and the main movement keeping good time during initial testing.

The musical mechanism has also been tested and is working. Automatic activation of the musical alarm has not yet been independently verified.

The clock presents in attractive antique condition, displaying natural age-related patination, surface marks, tarnishing and wear to the metal finish, with ageing visible to the glazing. These characteristics are consistent with its age and use.

An appealing and increasingly uncommon example of early 20th-century German horology, combining decorative craftsmanship, mechanical timekeeping and a musical alarm in one compact and highly collectable piece.

This German Edwardian carriage clock originates from circa 1900 and exemplifies late Victorian to early Edwardian style. The architectural piece consists of a silver-toned metal case, an elaborately embossed gilt-coloured front panel with scrolling foliage engraving, and a stepped base. A circular white enamel dial features Roman numerals, black hands, a seconds dial at 12 o'clock, and a 12-hour alarm-setting dial at 6 o'clock. The construction incorporates glazed side panels, a decorative overhanging top, and a brass carrying handle with a flat rectangular grip mounted on small scrolled brackets. Natural age-related patination, tarnishing, and surface marks appear across the metal surfaces, alongside visible ageing to the glazing. Measuring 14.5 cm high, 13 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep, the compact mantel clock is designed for placement on a mantelpiece in a study or gentleman's library. The mechanical movement is key-wound, with the winding key stored inside a hinged rear access compartment. The internal mechanism drives the timekeeping function and a mechanical musical alarm. The piece is suitable for display on a shelf or desktop where the exposed side panels provide a view of the internal components.

Carriage clocks originated in the early nineteenth century for travellers needing portable timekeeping. By the Edwardian period, around 1900 to 1910, these timepieces evolved into decorative household items often incorporating alarm or musical mechanisms.

These clocks commonly featured cast brass or bronze cases, sometimes plated in silver or nickel, with bevelled glass panels and enamel or brass dials housing spring-driven mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy mechanical movements, platform escapements visible through glass panels, hand-engraved dial plates, and maker marks or serial numbers stamped on the back plate.

Place the timepiece on a mantelpiece, office desk, or bookshelf where the metalwork catches the light, creating a focused contrast against modern minimal backdrops or vintage timber furniture.

Keep the casing clean with a soft dry cloth, avoid winding the mechanism too tightly, and have the internal movement professionally oiled and serviced every three to five years by a qualified horologist.
