This seventeenth-century William and Mary cabinet on chest is constructed from burr walnut veneer with oak linings, brass hardware, and warm brown timber tones. The upper section consists of double cupboard doors decorated with featherbanding and secured by ornate brass strap hinges, set beneath a cushion-moulded cornice and above a concealed frieze drawer. The lower section contains two small upper drawers over two larger graduated drawers, all fitted with decorative swan neck handles, brass backplates, and keyhole escutcheons. The whole piece is raised on substantial turned bun feet. Measuring 114.3 cm in width, 166 cm in height, and 52.1 cm in depth, this tall storage item suits placement in a traditional sitting room or study as a practical bookcase substitute or wardrobe alternative.

Originating in late 17th-century Britain, a cabinet on chest consists of an upper two-door cupboard set upon a chest of drawers, reflecting Dutch architectural influences introduced during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II.

These pieces typically feature highly figured burr walnut veneers laid over oak or pine carcases, framed with crossbanding, feather banding, cushion mouldings, and decorative brass mounts or drop handles.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer construction, thick hand-cut veneers, oak or pine drawer linings, period-appropriate brass hardware, and turned bun feet.

Place this substantial storage piece against a neutral backdrop in a hallway, dining room, or living area, balancing dark wood tones with minimalist contemporary art or clean-lined lighting.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement, dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish sparingly.
