This matching pair of vintage bedside chests follows a Georgian style and dates from 1930. Constructed from mahogany with flame mahogany veneer and brass hardware, the units display a warm brown colour with rich figured grain. Each chest measures 66 cm high, 54.5 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, incorporating three drawers with serpentine fronts, brass ring pull handles on rosette backplates, moulded edges along the shaped tops, and classic bracket feet. Suitable for use in a bedroom as functional bedside tables, these chests provide practical storage alongside traditional English country house styling. The matched pair combines clean joinery lines with decorative wood figuring, offering a balanced arrangement on either side of a bed within a domestic interior.

FAQs

Georgian furniture design, originating in 18th-century Britain, is defined by classical proportions, symmetry, and refined woodwork. Key elements include the prominent use of mahogany, flame timber veneers, elegant bracket feet, and brass drop-ring handles.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilized solid mahogany and figured flame mahogany veneers over secondary timbers like pine or oak. Construction features include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass hardware, and hand-waxed finishes.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer sides, historical wear around the drawer runners, original brass escutcheons or pull handles, and naturally aged timber tone. Revival pieces from the 20th century exhibit similar styling but feature uniform machine dovetailing and modern drawer construction.

Place the matching chests symmetrically on either side of a bed frame to create balance. Pair the deep mahogany wood tones with warm neutral wall paint, modern brass table lamps, and crisp linen bedding to bridge traditional cabinet-making with contemporary aesthetics.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer fading.
