Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Longcase Clock

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautifully proportioned antique Edwardian longcase clock dating from the early 20th century, finely crafted in mahogany with elegant line inlay and a shaped hood. The case features a swan-neck pediment with brass finials, a glazed trunk door revealing the brass pendulum and a square brass dial with spandrels and silvered chapter ring.

The movement is an eight-day striking mechanism striking the hours on a mellow bell and remains in excellent working order. The dial, spandrels, and hands are all original, while the oak-backed case retains its rich, warm patina and shows no signs of damage or restoration.

This clock embodies the refined style and quality craftsmanship of the Edwardian period — lighter and more graceful than its Victorian predecessors — making it an elegant statement piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

This Edwardian longcase clock dates from the early 20th century, following the traditional English tall case format. The wooden construction combines rich warm brown mahogany timbers with contrasting satinwood urn inlay on the central door and base panel, complemented by delicate line inlay along the uprights. The upper section takes the form of an arched hood with a swan-neck pediment, enclosing a square brass dial fitted with intricate corner spandrels, a silvered chapter ring, and an inscribed dial face reading Tempus Fugit above the centre. The narrow waist incorporates a glazed glass door panel, while the whole stands upon stepped bracket feet. Measuring 167 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 23.5 cm deep, this floor-standing timepiece provides a striking vertical silhouette suited to traditional and contemporary hallway or living room interiors. The eight-day striking movement operates an internal mechanism that chimes the hours, housed within a polished oak-backed enclosure that maintains its original patina without visible structural damage.

Edwardian longcase clocks, produced between 1901 and 1910, frequently revived classical eighteenth-century styles such as Sheraton and Hepplewhite. They are characterised by slender proportions, mahogany casings decorated with satinwood inlay or marquetry, and brass dials often featuring arch motifs.

These clocks typically feature a solid oak or pine secondary carcass veneered with rich mahogany and decorated with contrasting satinwood or boxwood inlay. The dial assembly uses cast brass, engraved steel hands, and glass panels to protect the mechanical face.

Authentic Edwardian clocks show signs of natural aging, including natural oxidisation on internal timber surfaces and period-accurate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails. Original movement components display brass movement plates, heavy lead weights, and genuine shellac or wax cabinet finishes.

A longcase clock functions well as a focal architectural anchor in an entrance hall, stair landing, or formal reception room. Pairing dark mahogany timber against neutral backdrop colours or contemporary artwork creates an engaging contrast between historic craft and modern aesthetics.

Position the clock away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp areas to prevent timber shrinkage or lacquer deterioration. Apply a quality beeswax polish annually to maintain the wood, and arrange for a qualified horologist to lubricate and inspect the mechanical movement every five to seven years.
