A fabulous decorative pair of antique early 20th-century Chinese Famille Rose porcelain vases, dating to circa 1900–1930, and beautifully hand-painted with traditional figural garden scenes against a striking rich yellow ground.
The figures are surrounded by an abundance of traditional Chinese garden decoration, including bamboo, flowering peonies, foliage and stylised rockwork, all picked out in a particularly attractive palette of turquoise, pink, orange, blue and green enamels.
One vase depicts a solitary scholar or gentleman carrying an auspicious or scholarly object, while its companion portrays two elderly gentlemen accompanied by a young attendant.
The shoulders are further decorated with trailing bamboo foliage, while the necks are encircled by a particularly attractive black-ground floral border, decorated with colourful flowers and scrolling foliage.
