19th Century Malay / Brunei Brass Betel Nut or Sirih Box, c.1880

A substantial 19th-century Southeast Asian brass betel or sirih box, probably originating from the Malay Peninsula, Brunei or Borneo region.

The heavy rectangular box is formed with chamfered corners, stepped moulded sides and a raised architectural lid centred by a finely hand-engraved panel of symmetrical scrolling floral and foliate ornament within geometric borders.

The restrained vegetal decoration and formal geometric framing are characteristic of Malay Islamic decorative metalwork, where figural ornament was generally avoided in favour of stylised plant forms and repeating patterns.

The lid is secured by a long integral barrel hinge and opens to reveal a plain, deep interior, historically suitable for the storage of betel, sirih, tobacco or associated ingredients.

The box has considerable weight and presence, being constructed from substantial brass rather than thin sheet metal.
