Fine Quality 18th Century, 8 Day, Mahogany Longcase Clock by William Allam of London C.1760.

Fine quality arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring, decorative mask & foliate corner spandrels and separate calendar wheel & seconds hand. Arch with strike/ silent.

Lovely original spun glass to hood door, all original hinges to hood & trunk door & original locks. Hood with glazed windows to sides & with appealing canted corner detail.

Slim, solid mahogany case with oak back and beautiful flame mahogany veneers to trunk door & plinth panel.

A very handsome longcase clock in excellent condition & in good working order.

William Allam was a member of the the Clockmakers Company between 1743-1785 & was registered as working at Bond Street, London.

Dimensions:

Width 20 3/4" (52.7cm) at top of hood.

Width 19" (48.3cm) at base.

Height 85 5/8" (217.5cm)

A Georgian longcase clock is a tall, weight-driven standing clock crafted in Britain during the reign of the Georgian monarchs between 1714 and 1830. These timepieces are characterised by timber cabinetry, frequently in mahogany or walnut, housing an eight-day or thirty-hour mechanical movement.

18th-century longcase clocks were constructed with oak carcasses covered in fine flame mahogany, walnut, or fruitwood veneers. The interior movements were built from cast brass plates and steel arbors, accompanied by engraved brass and silvered dials.

Authentic period clocks feature hand-cut brass gears, cast brass corner spandrels, and silvered chapter rings on the dial face. Cabinetwork from this era exhibits hand-cut dovetails, historic wood shrinkage marks, and original cast iron weights.
