A Georgian Longcase / Grandfather Clock by George Hallifax of Doncaster.

Description

A good quality oak 8 day longcase clock by George Hallifax of Doncaster, circa 1770.

The case constructed of quarter sawn oak, having a break arched hood with a central turned wooden finial. The glazed door with attached turned columns terminating with wooden capitals and matching quarter turned columns to the rear of the hood. 

The long trunk door with a shaped top and the original escutcheon and steel lock.

The box base surmounted on a moulded plinth.

The arched brass dial with a finely matted and engraved centre, the engraved silvered brass Roman chapter ring with Arabic five minute markers, surrounded by finely cast brass spandrels.

The dial arch with a silvered convex boss signed Geo Hallifax Doncaster with an engraved sun motif above, flanked by cast brass dolphin spandrels.

Silvered engraved calendar ring, with the aperture above the number al VI.

The fine quality fully restored movement of eight day duration united by four knopped pillars, with anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell.

The original lead weights and convex brass faced bob pendulum.

The original finely wrought and fretted blued steel hands.

A beautiful quality clock in excellent original condition with the movement expertly restored.

The movement is fully restored by our horologist who is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 50 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.

George Hallifax was the fourth son of John Hallifax, an already established clockmaker in Barnsley. George had moved to Doncaster by 1750, establishing his own reputation as a good clockmaker and later becoming mayor in 1775 and again in 1792.

John Hallifax and George Hallifax produced some very distinctive barometers, only a small number of barometers by John and George Hallifax have survived and are generally in distinguished collections like The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, all of them share the same distinctive longcase clock outline.
