Large 19th C Satsuma Vase

Description

A Substantial 19th Century Satsuma Vase.

With an outswept rim, with a scallop and folded edge. The concave neck decorated with panels of rising and spreading flowers, against a lattice ground, and between borders of petal heads. The decoration continued to the shoulders of the vase, and alternating with reserves filled with pairs of doves, wading cranes, and butterflies. The main body with scenes of courtiers and attendants on the edge of a garden. Intensely decorated and highlighted in gilt. Cover restored.

Date circa 1870.

Height 17 1/4 inches, 44cm.

Diameter 12 inches, 31cm.

Satsuma ware originates from the Satsuma province in southern Japan, dating back to the late sixteenth century. By the nineteenth-century Meiji period, production adapted specifically for Western export, characterised by intricate gilded brocade painting, dense figural compositions, and crackle-glazed earthenware.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from a light-coloured earthenware body featuring a finely crazed or crackled lead glaze. The exterior surfaces are decorated using raised polychrome enamels (known as moriage) and burnished gold leaf gilding.

Authentic nineteenth-century Satsuma items display a distinctive ivory or cream-toned crackle glaze under heavy polychrome enamelling. Look for fine gilded hand-painted detail, density in the decorative panels, and makers marks or shimazu family crests painted on the base.

A substantial oriental vessel creates visual balance when displayed as a solitary hero piece on a sideboard, console table, or within an unused fireplace alcove. Placing it against neutral plaster or dark timber panelling highlights the elaborate gilded surface work.
