This pair of late 19th-century Louis XV revival bedside cabinets dates from 1890 and is constructed from mahogany with dark brown timber tones, white variegated marble tops, and polished surfaces. Each piece features a single upper drawer fitted with a gilded brass drop handle, an open shelf recess, and a lower cupboard with a left or right-hand opening door, moulded fronts, and an ornate brass pull. The cabinetry stands upon slender cabriole legs at the front and rear, accented with carved acanthus leaf details and scrolling feet. Each cabinet measures 84 cm high, 40.5 cm wide, and 40.5 cm deep. These versatile items function as practical bedside storage units in a bedroom or as small side tables in a living space, providing display surfaces and enclosed compartments for everyday items while bringing French chateau styling into a home today.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, bedside cabinetsoften called pot cupboardswere designed to store nighttime utility items. French craftsmen routinely incorporated marble tops to protect the wooden structures from liquid damage, resulting in functional pieces that adhered to formal decorative styles such as Louis XV and Rococo Revival.

Furniture makers of this era predominantly used fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood for the main structure. Tops were commonly cut from natural marble, while handles, escutcheons, and mounts were cast in brass or gilt bronze.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit period construction techniques, including hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks, and natural oxidation on the underside of the wood and brass hardware. Additionally, original marble tops usually show soft edge wear and slight irregularities consistent with hand-finishing.

These pieces function effectively as flankers to a modern bed, offering a tonal contrast between rich mahogany hues and light upholstery. Modern table lamps or low-profile ceramics placed on the marble surfaces help integrate historical furniture into contemporary bedroom schemes.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain the timber. Clean marble tops using a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone, avoiding acidic substances that can etch or dull the surface.
