19thc Bronzed Russian Iron Casket, with Mounted Hound

So-called "Berlin Iron." Cast iron, blackened. Rectangular in shape, resting on four stylized lion's paws. The body is decorated with burning candelabra, flanked by two seated, relief griffins or framed by highly volute tendrils. Below the rim is a continuous, ornamented band of fruit and rosettes. On the flat lid is a fully sculpted depiction of a reclining greyhound with crossed forelegs and a collar. Inside is a tinned steel insert with a baluster knob. Height 19.5 cm. Dimensions: 18 cm x 11 cm.

The motif of the reclining greyhound was extremely popular in the 19th century and was produced as a paperweight with variously shaped bases in the most famous Prussian iron foundries, including Gleiwitz and Sayn.
