Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Elizabethan coffer is a wooden storage trunk dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (15581603). These utilitarian pieces were constructed using mortise and tenon joinery to store textiles, clothing, and household valuables.

Sixteenth-century coffers were primarily constructed from native English oak due to its durability. Construction relied on wooden dowels (tree-nails), hand-planed panels, and hand-forged iron straps, hinges, and lockplates.

Authentic pieces feature pegged joinery rather than modern screws or nails, uneven hand-sawn timber marks, and heavy oxidation near iron fittings. Original lockplates often show signs of hand-hammering and irregular keyhole alignment.

A period oak coffer functions effectively as a focal point at the foot of a bed, beneath a window, or as a low console table in an entryway. The architectural lines complement both traditional schemes and minimalist modern settings.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or splitting. Clean with a dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to protect the original patination.
