18th Century French Provincial Chestnut Lavabo Cabinet with Original Pewter Cistern & Basin

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An unusual 18th-century French provincial chestnut lavabo retaining its original pewter cistern and basin.

The shaped and moulded backboard incorporates three small display shelves and supports a lidded pewter cistern engraved with a crowned armorial, fitted with twin brass taps. Beneath sits the shaped pewter basin above a moulded chestnut cupboard fitted with a single drawer over a cupboard door enclosing shelved storage. The drawer and cupboard retain their original fabric lining.

Originally intended for washing before the widespread installation of running water, lavabos are among the most distinctive forms of French provincial furniture. Today they make highly decorative statement pieces and are equally suited to a country kitchen, dining room, hallway or garden room, where they provide both practical storage and considerable character.

The cupboard is constructed from unusually thick chestnut timbers, reflecting the robust craftsmanship typical of provincial French furniture of the period.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 183cm

Width: 73cm

Depth: 47cm

CONDITION

The lavabo is in good, solid condition and presents well overall, with attractive colour and patina developed through age and use. There are the expected marks, knocks and historic repairs consistent with its age.

There is evidence of historic woodworm throughout, most noticeably to the lower section of the cupboard, although the timber remains sound and robust. There is a small split to the rear of the sink recess together with historic repairs to both the pewter cistern, where one of the taps joins the lid, and the rear joints of the pewter basin.

One of the detachable brass tap handles is missing. The cupboard door requires slight lifting when closing due to wear in the hinges, although it functions correctly. The drawer runs freely, the cupboard is fitted with a modern lock supplied with a working key, and both the drawer and cupboard remain lined with fabric.

Overall, this is a rare and characterful example of an 18th-century French provincial lavabo that retains its original form and remains an impressive decorative piece.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lavabo cabinet is a traditional French piece of washstand furniture created for handwashing, comprising a wall-mounted or integrated backboard with a water reservoir above a small cupboard housing a collection basin.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from durable regional hardwoods such as chestnut, oak, or walnut, paired with metal water reservoirs and basins made of pewter, brass, or lead glazed pottery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, peg construction, original hand-forged iron hardware, authentic patination from age, and regional design motifs characteristic of French provincial carpentry.

In contemporary settings, lavabos serve as statement hallway accent pieces, unique bathroom vanities, or decorative focal points in dining rooms and entryways.

Chestnut wood should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with natural beeswax polish, while pewter elements require gentle cleaning with warm water and non-abrasive soap to preserve historical oxidation.
