Chinese Qing Dynasty Red & Black Lacquer Cabinet, Fujian, Late 19th Century

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A late nineteenth-century Chinese Qing dynasty red and black lacquered wood cabinet from Fujian Province. The upper section is enclosed by a pair of glazed doors, each incorporating relief-carved and gilt panels depicting figures within traditional landscapes. Below, a larger cupboard is enclosed by a pair of black lacquered panel doors decorated in gilt with birds amongst flowering branches and inscribed with Chinese characters.

The inscriptions translate as 'Prolong Life' to the left-hand panel and 'Wealth and Good Fortune' to the right, reflecting traditional Chinese wishes for longevity and prosperity. Beneath the cupboard are two drawers fitted with shaped brass handles, and the cabinet stands on square supports with carved corner brackets.

Both decorative and practical, this cabinet offers useful storage while serving as an attractive focal point.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 172cm

Width: 97cm

Depth: 50cm

CONDITION

The cabinet is in good, solid condition and presents well overall. There are minor marks, knocks and scratches consistent with its age and use, together with the expected wear to the lacquered finish. The brass mounts and fittings display an attractive aged patina. Overall, this is a well-preserved example with honest signs of age that do not detract from its appearance or functionality.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Qing Dynasty furniture is characterised by structural frame-and-panel construction, rich lacquer finishes, hand-painted or carved decorative panels, and prominent brass metalwork, originating across various crafting provinces in China.

These pieces were constructed from regional timber such as elm, pine, or cedar, layered with natural sap-based lacquer, decorative paint or leaf gilding, and fitted with hand-forged brass plates and handles.

Authentic period examples demonstrate traditional joinery techniques without modern screws, visible age-related surface wear to the lacquer, original hand-cut brass mountings, and hand-painted iconographic motifs.

A lacquer cabinet serves as a strong accent piece when placed against neutral walls, contrasted with contemporary minimalist furniture, or integrated into an eclectic design scheme.

Keep lacquer furniture positioned away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid cracking, dust regularly with a clean dry microfibre cloth, and avoid applying water or chemical solvents.
