Rare Blue Lacquer Grandmother Clock

19th century
For Sale by Carse Antiques
Description

VERY RARE Queen Anne style mid 19th century blue lacquer 8 day grandmother clock. This is a stunning clock and very rare, I have never seen another blue lacquer clock of this size and quality anywhere. The 8 day movement is a similar movement as those found in bracket clocks with original brass and silver dial with strike silent. The blue lacquer and gilt decoration to the case is all original with minor wear as to be expected. The clock has been fully serviced and as such is in perfect working order. You'll never see another one !!!!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A grandmother clock is a slender, floor-standing longcase clock typically measuring under six feet in height, whereas a grandfather clock is larger and taller, usually exceeding six feet. Originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, grandmother clocks often feature narrower proportions and decorative case finishes, such as lacquer or japanned decoration.

Traditional lacquered clock cases were constructed from timber frameworks, such as pine or oak, covered with built-up coats of varnish or resin to emulate East Asian lacquerwork. The decorative elements utilized raised gesso relief, gold leaf, metallic powders, and hand-applied pigments depicting architectural scenes and botanical foliage.

Authentic lacquered and japanned clocks exhibit natural fine surface crazing, subtle paint wear, and genuine oxidisation across the metallic powders and gilding. Original examples also feature hand-engraved brass dials, cast spandrels, and mechanical movements consistent with historical horological techniques.

A decorative lacquered floor clock functions as a focal point when set against neutral plaster walls or minimalist panelling. Placing the piece in an entryway, stair landing, or alcove allows the intricate painted detailing to contrast with contemporary architectural lines.

Lacquered timber requires protection from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent shrinking or flaking of the decorative finish. Dusting should be performed gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaning agents, waxes, or chemical solvents.
