This Victorian entomological cabinet from circa 1890 is constructed in deal and mahogany with a warm brown finish. The upright rectangular form stands on a simple plinth base and features a glazed outer door on brass hinges, enclosing fifteen shallow specimen drawers fitted with turned wooden knobs. Each drawer contains a Plastazote base lining and a closely fitting glazed frame top, and the cabinet retains an original lock. The proportions measure 107 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Designed by Messrs Watkins & Doncaster of the Strand, London, this piece accommodates collecting pursuits in a study or library. The functional form suits the organisation of small specimens and natural history collections, while the glazed door allows visibility of the contents while protecting them from dust.

A Victorian entomology cabinet is a specialized piece of furniture constructed during the late nineteenth century to store, organize, and protect natural history specimens, particularly insects and butterflies, inside shallow glass-topped drawers.

These cabinets were typically constructed from high-grade woods such as mahogany or oak, featuring glazed front doors, brass hardware, and tight-fitting cedar or mahogany drawers designed to reduce pest access.

Authentic pieces produced by Watkins & Doncaster often carry a maker plaque or paper trade label inside the door or frame, featuring precision drawer fittings with cork or peat lining and characteristic brass or turned wood knobs.

Place the cabinet as a standalone accent piece in a study, library, or hallway, using the flat top surface to display modest decorative objects or table lighting to highlight the timber grain.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying or warping. Clean surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber finish.
