19th Century Mahogany Campaign Filing Cabinet, C1890

19th century
Description

Striking 19th-Century Mahogany Campaign Filing or Drawing Cabinet, English circa 1890

This exceptionally well presented late Victorian mahogany campaign cabinet, dating from around 1890, was originally designed as a folio, map or filing chest and beautifully combines refined military style with superb practical storage. Made in solid mahogany with quality tongue-and-groove construction, it is a very rare example retaining all eleven of its original drawers and brass handles, arranged in an unusual configuration of six smaller drawers over five larger, graduated drawers.

The rectangular top has a moulded edge and is inset with black tooled leather, giving the piece a smart and tailored appearance. The drawers are fitted with their original flush mounted brass campaign handles and are set above a solid plinth base, while the sides are attractively panelled, underlining the quality of the cabinet.

With its warm colour, rich patina and elegant proportions, this chest is both a highly functional storage solution and a fine piece of late 19th-century British campaign furniture. It brings character, history and understated sophistication to any interior, and works equally well in a study, library, sitting room or contemporary office. England, circa 1890.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Campaign furniture was manufactured to be collapsible or easily transported for military officers on deployment during the nineteenth century, featuring flush brass hardware to prevent damage during movement.

Victorian campaign furniture was typically constructed from durable timbers such as mahogany or teak, fitted with solid brass flush handles, corner brackets, and occasionally finished with leather writing or working surfaces.

Authentic pieces feature inset brass handles that sit perfectly flush with the timber surface, heavy-duty brass strapping, hand-cut dovetail joints, and often show modular construction designed for travel.

A campaign cabinet serves as an ideal focal piece in a modern study, hallway, or living area, pairing rich mahogany timber and brass accents with minimalist clean lines and modern artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically following the grain of the wood, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
