Antique French Miniature Fully Engraved Gilt Brass Carriage Clock 8 Day Case Key

19th century
Description

A rare and highly decorative 19th Century French miniature gilt brass carriage clock, exceptionally small in scale and beautifully finished with intricate all-over hand engraving throughout the case. Despite its compact proportions, the clock displays all the elegance and craftsmanship associated with fine French carriage clocks of the period.

The rectangular gilt brass case is richly engraved with scrolling foliate decoration to every visible surface, giving the piece a luxurious jewel-like appearance. The white enamel dial with Arabic numerals is framed within an engraved surround, while the eight-day movement is housed within the finely detailed case.

An especially desirable feature is the survival of its original leather-covered travelling case with fitted fabric-lined interior and double opening doors, together with two original winding keys — something rarely retained with these miniature examples.

Miniature carriage clocks of this quality and size are increasingly difficult to find, particularly complete with their original case and accessories. A charming and highly collectible object, ideal for a desk, cabinet, or refined clock collection.

Dimensions:

Height: 5 cm

Width: 3.5 cm

A rare surviving example of a French miniature engraved carriage clock, presented complete and ready to display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France in the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were portable timepieces developed for travellers, featuring sturdy spring-driven movements and protective fitted cases.

Traditional French carriage clocks are constructed from gilt brass, cast bronze, and glass, frequently featuring hand-painted white enamel dials.

Authentic examples usually feature solid gilt brass cases, escapements visible through top glass panels, maker marks stamped on the movement back plate, and hand-engraved detailing.

Position the clock on a mantelpiece, styled alongside framed artwork, leather-bound books, or displayed on an office desk or bookshelf.

Dust the exterior gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid chemical cleaners that wear down gilt finish, and have the internal mechanism serviced periodically by a horologist.
