Early Victorian Inlaid Mahogany Writing Slope / Lap Desk C.1840

Description

A very handsome antique English writing box in Mahogany, inlaid with Boxwood and Ebony stringing and finished with an inlaid brass plaque to the lid and an escutcheon which houses the taselled working key.

The interior reveals a gold embossed leather writing surface with both sides opening for the storage of stationery and other writing accessories.

The box also has a removable pen tray, a sloped postage stamp section and at each end, a brass topped inkwell, one for black in and the other for red. Each end has a cast brass carrying handle.

Dating to around 1840, the box is in excellent condition; measuring 14" x 9" x 4 1/2" while closed. Pen & Stationery not included - for photography only.
