Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Shrinkage lines in the burr veneer: natural movement of early hand-cut wood.
Crossbanded border inlay around the edges: cabinetmaking of the late eighteenth century.
Cast brass bail handle with pierced backplate: eighteenth-century rococo pattern with aged patina.
Soft rubbing through of the finish along edges: gentle handling over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An unusual Georgian decorative box in a semi-circular demilune profile, designed with a flat back edge and a lidded compartment. The piece is constructed from timber with a highly figured burr wood veneer displaying a warm reddish brown colouration, finished with a polished sheen and a distinct aged patina. Additional details include a small central brass lid finial on top and subtle horizontal moulding lines running along the upper and lower borders. Practical dimensions are 29 cm wide by 12.8 cm high. This decorative object is suited for display on a sideboard top or tabletop within an English country house interior, serving as a container for small domestic items.

FAQs

A demilune box is a half-moon shaped container produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries in Great Britain, frequently utilised as a tea caddy, workbox, or personal storage accessory.

Georgian boxes typically feature timber cores covered in rich veneers such as burr walnut, yew, or mahogany, often constructed using hand-cut joinery and finished with cast brass hardware.

Authentic Georgian pieces display hand-planed internal surfaces, slight irregularities in dovetail joints, natural wood oxidisation, and original period brass fittings.

Position the flat rear edge against a wall on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to introduce historical warmth alongside contemporary art or ceramics.

Position the object away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer movement, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying beeswax occasionally.
