Small Longcase Clock Queen Anne - Early Georgian Period

18th century
For Sale by Heydays Antiques
Description

Born in 1695 John Calver of Woodbridge

Probably one of his Early Longcases, This Small 77.5in Longcase or Grandmother Clock with Robust Rope Single Hand 30 Hour Movement that has been Checked, Serviced & Tested to be in Good Working Order.

The Ebonised Finish is Typical of the Finish Added to Longcase Clocks During Queen Victoria's Mourning with the Death of her Husband, Albert. Though it may well have had a finish from it's Origins.

I have enjoyed a number of John Calver Clocks. All have been Well Constructed.

I Currently have a Beautiful Chinoiserie Cased Clock by John Calver - SA1156736.

One of my Previous John Calver Longcase Clocks has been Incorporated in to A Modern Art Sculpture - The Trunk is now Knotted!!!! Oh Well.

Biography John Calver, born 1695, died 1751, is described as 'one of Suffolk's best makers of his period'. He married Mary Trott in October 1738, who died in 1750 having borne no children. Calver's will was proven in April 1751 in which a bequest was made that his former apprentice William Mahyew be allowed to purchase the shop and premises in Stone Street, Woodbridge (now Church Street) for £105 as long as stock was also purchased at cost. A number of clocks are known signed for Calver including a green lacquered longcase example with a rare 'Equation of Time' sheet set within the inside of the trunk door. Reference Arthur L. Hagger & Leonard F. Miller Suffolk Clocks & Clockmakers Pub. Authors 1974.

This small longcase clock from the Queen Anne and early Georgian period dates from the 18th century and originates from the workshop of John Calver of Woodbridge. Constructed from ebonised wood, the tall case is finished in black with a glass door in the hood enclosing a square brass dial with Roman numerals and ornate gilt corner spandrels. The design includes a single hand, turned columns flanking the hood, robust mouldings, a trunk door with a brass escutcheon and keyhole, and a stepped plinth base. Signs of age include surface wear and scuffs to the black ebonised finish. Measuring 192 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 26.5 cm deep, the clock is suitable for display in a traditional study, hallway, or living room. The thirty-hour single-hand movement is checked, serviced, and tested to be in good working order. The ebonised finish is typical of the finish added to longcase clocks during Queen Victoria's mourning with the death of her husband, Albert, though it may well have had a finish from its origins. John Calver is described as one of Suffolk's best makers of his period, known for well-constructed pieces. Placed against a wall in a home interior, the traditional grandfather or grandmother clock functions as a striking horological timepiece and a decorative furnishing that complements historic or classic interior schemes.

Longcase clocks from the Queen Anne and Early Georgian periods, spanning the early eighteenth century, are characterised by slender proportions, square brass dials, and ornate corner spandrels. Cases were frequently executed in walnut, fruitwood, or ebonised timber.

These clocks typically feature weight-driven movements made of brass and steel. The cases were constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or pine, often finished with ebonised paint, black lacquer, or wood veneers, accompanied by cast brass dial ornaments.

Authentic early longcase clocks usually feature a single-sheet or composite brass dial, cast brass spandrels surrounding a central chapter ring, iron weights, and hand-forged steel hands. The movement is secured within a wooden hood using traditional joinery methods.

A dark or ebonised longcase clock serves as a vertical focal point in modern entryways, hallways, or living rooms. Positioned against lighter neutral walls, it provides historical contrast alongside contemporary or minimal furnishings.

Keep the wooden case away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or finish degradation. Mechanical movements require periodic lubrication and professional cleaning by a horologist every five to seven years.
