FAQs

Coquilla nut snuff boxes are small, highly detailed carved containers fashioned from the hard, dense nut of the South American palm Attalea funifera, widely popular during the 18th and 19th centuries for holding tobacco.

Craftsmen utilised the dense, dark brown kernel of the coquilla nut, often combining it with inlaid bone or metal pins for button details, employing intricate hand-carving and turning techniques on a lathe.

Authentic pieces exhibit a natural dark brown grain that takes a high polish, distinct tool marks from hand-carving, appropriate age-related patination, and often screw-fit or friction-fit lidded compartments.

These small-scale historical objects work well when displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or glass-topped coffee table as curated curiosity pieces that add texture and historical narrative to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking, occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to maintain the polished surface.
