Edwardian Country House Oak Letter Box

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming Edwardian oak country-house letter box, beautifully made and full of period character. The sloped top is fitted with a metal letter slot crisply labelled “LETTERS”, sitting above brass label holders that would once have held the household’s postal instructions or collection times. Underneath there is a glazed panel so you can see if there is any post and series pigeons holes each designed for sorting incoming letters and telegrams — the lower section still bears its original metal “TELEGRAMS” plaque. There is also a small tray for collecting and carrying the day’s mail. Crafted in solid oak with a warm, mellow patina, the piece has side carrying handles and all the quiet practicality you’d expect from a well-run country estate. Both decorative and functional, it makes a wonderful hallway feature or a characterful addition to a study or office.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

In Edwardian country estates, tabletop letter boxes were placed in hall spaces or morning rooms to collect outgoing mail and telegrams prior to daily postal collection by domestic staff.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, complemented by cast or stamped brass apertures, glass inspection panels, and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass hardware stamped with period typography, working lock plates, and natural age-related oxidisation on metal fittings.

An antique letter box can be styled on a hallway console, home office desk, or sideboard to store daily post, stationery, or modern devices while providing historical context.

The wood surface should be cleaned with a dry lint-free cloth and nourished periodically with beeswax polish, while brass elements should be kept free from harsh chemical cleaners to preserve original patina.
