Large Highly Decorative Late 19th Century Japanese Meiji Period Shodana Cabinet

19th century
Description

A large late 19th century (circa 1890) highly decorative Japanese Meiji period shodana cabinet.

This shodana consists of a carved cornice with frieze below depicting birds, floral and foliate decoration.

This leads down to an arrangement of twelve asymmetrical cupboards, sliding doors, open shelves and drawers with panels of applied bone, mother of pearl and ivory decoration depicting figures, birds, flowers and foliage creating decorative scenes influenced by nature.

The cabinet also consists of many pierced carvings of flowers, foliage and birds both to the front and panelled sides, all supported on a shaped and carved base.

This shodana is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A shodana is a traditional Japanese display cabinet featuring asymmetrical shelving, sliding doors, and small cupboards designed to exhibit art objects during the Meiji era.

These pieces typically incorporate dense hardwoods such as rosewood or teak, embellished with lacquerwork, mother-of-pearl, carved bone, and silver filigree inlays.

Authentic examples exhibit complex hand-carved framing, detailed Shibayama inlay work depicting flora or birds, lacquer panels, and period-appropriate hand-fitted joinery.

Position the piece as a focal statement against a plain backdrop, allowing the asymmetrical shelving and intricate inlay work to contrast with modern, minimalist architectural lines.

Position the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, maintaining a stable humidity level, and dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
