In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian writing box, also known as a writing slope or lap desk, is a portable wooden case produced during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. Designed for travel and personal correspondence, these boxes opened to reveal a slanted writing surface alongside compartments for inkwells, quills, and stationery.

These boxes were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often finished with decorative veneers. The ornamentation frequently features geometric marquetry or parquetry using contrasting woods like boxwood and ebony, along with brass escutcheons, hinges, and lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces typically display signs of hand-drawn joinery, hand-cut dovetails, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass mortise locks. Original lining fabrics like velvet or skiver leather inside the slope, combined with natural wood oxidisation and age-related surface patina, further indicate nineteenth-century production.

An antique writing box functions as a refined accent piece when placed flat on an executive desk, coffee table, or console. It can be displayed closed to showcase the inlaid woodwork or styled open on a stand to display vintage letters and desk accessories.

To preserve the wood veneer and inlay, keep the item away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations. Clean the surface gently with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and maintain its lustre.
