Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century English country linen cupboard is constructed from pine with a honey brown painted finish. The freestanding piece stands 234 cm high, 131 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. The upper section comprises two tall doors with fielded panels and painted spandrels within a moulded cornice, while the lower section provides two full-width drawers fitted with small round metal ring handles. Natural signs of age appear across the wooden surfaces in the visible wear and grain patterns. Suitable for use in a bedroom or dressing room, this storage item accommodates clothes and linens on internal shelves or a hanging rail. The traditional profile and country house style integrate well into period interiors and rustic settings alike.

FAQs

Traditionally used in 18th and 19th-century households, a linen cupboard or press was designed specifically to store household linens, bedding, and clothing flat before hanging wardrobes became widespread. These pieces feature upper cupboard doors concealing shelves or trays, positioned over lower storage drawers.

Most English provincial linen cupboards were constructed from pine or deal, chosen for durability and joinery work. The timber was frequently finished with hand-painted graining, scumble glazes, or distemper paint to protect the wood and imitate darker hardwoods like mahogany or oak.

Authentic original painted finishes display natural wear patterns, timber shrinkage along panel joints, and surface patination in high-touch areas around handles and keyholes. Modern reproductions typically lack genuine hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, period ironwork, and authentic timber oxidisation on unpainted surfaces.

An antique painted cupboard functions as a focal storage piece in modern bedrooms, hallways, or open-plan dining spaces. Pairing warm painted timber with minimalist neutral walls, natural fabrics, and contemporary lighting balances historical character with modern functionality.

Preserve original painted surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoiding chemical or abrasive cleaners. Position the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, flaking paint, or wood shrinkage.
