Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1890s.
I have just got it back from my restorer who dismantled it for professional precision cleaning, creating this wonderful showy piece. Whilst cleaning the box was opened (the escutcheon is faux, the only way this would be emptied would be by unscrewing from the base) and two steel plates were found under the money slot, any money put in the box would pass through the steel plates and could not be shaken out the hole, staying secure inside until dismantled.
The box is in the from of a marriage trunk or chest, with two metal chains each side as handles. The top bears the initials of the two to be married, L M & D A and the dated 1898, all in copper. All four sides are fitted with solid brass plates with brass rivets and mounted with copper hands of love and hearts. The box stands on it's six original brass ball feet.
This would make a wonderful engagement or wedding gift, unique and heirloom.
Excellent condition, measuring 6 5/8" x 4 1/4" x 4 3/4" tall.
