Edwardian Cut Glass Bowl and Cover

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an early 20th century, cut glass bonbonnière and cover dating from the beginning of the 20th century, c1920.

The bonbonnière is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 100 years of use.

The bonbonnière is approximately cup-shaped and measures 10.3 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter at its rim. The bowl is cut with large strawberry diamonds, under which sits a couple of prism cuts. The bowl sits on an annulated knop and a vertically facet cut stem atop a plain terraced foot. The foot is radially cut to the underside The bonbonnière is 15 cm (6 inches) in height without the cover and 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height with the cover on.

The cover is cut with strawberry diamonds and prisms in the same manner as the bowl and has a cut inverted spire finial. We believe it to be the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bonbonnière and is a good fit.

There are no significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. A pretty piece of cut glass in excellent condition.

Lead glass weighing in at 665 g. (~ 1 lb. 8 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian cut glass is defined by geometric cutting techniques, high brilliance, and heavy lead content. Produced between 1901 and 1910, these pieces often feature diamond motifs, starbursts, and intricate faceted finials designed to maximize light refraction.

Pieces were predominantly crafted from high-lead crystal, incorporating lead oxide to increase density, weight, and clarity. The design patterns were hand-cut into the blown glass form using copper and stone wheels prior to polishing.

Authentic period cut glass retains sharp edges along the cut facets rather than soft molded edges. It exhibits substantial physical weight, high resonance when tapped gently, and minor hand-finishing imperfections or base wear marks consistent with age.

Position the piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table where natural or directional lighting can accent the cut facets. It serves as an effective decorative accent in both traditional and contemporary interior settings.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water, a gentle liquid detergent, and a soft cloth. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations, harsh abrasives, and dishwashers, drying immediately with a soft lint-free towel to prevent mineral spots.
