Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the mid to late nineteenth century, slate and marble mantel clocks became prominent decorative timepieces in Victorian homes. Many featured heavy, architectural cases made from black Belgian slate accented with coloured marble or malachite, housing reliable French brass movements.

These timepieces were typically constructed using dense black slate or limestone, contrasted with polished green or red marble panels. The internal clockwork mechanisms were built using cast brass gears, steel arbors, and enamel or ceramic dials.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples are exceptionally heavy due to the solid stone construction. They frequently feature incised geometric or floral gilding, visible pendulum apertures, Brocot escapements on the dial face, and stamped French movement maker marks on the back plate.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or study desk. Pairing dark stone timepieces with natural wooden surfaces, warm brass accents, or framed monochrome artwork complements contemporary classic interiors.

Dust the stone case regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners which can strip polished stone sealants. Mechanical movements require periodic lubrication and professional servicing by a horologist every three to five years.
