Satsuma pottery originates from the Satsuma province in southern Japan, dating back to the late sixteenth century, and gained wide prominence during the Meiji period (18681912) for international export. It is characterised by a light yellowish earthenware body, fine crackle glaze, and intricate polychrome enamel alongside gilded decoration.
