In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the 1870s.
It is very well made from solid camphor and has a lovely colour and patina.
The top is hinged and opens to reveal a fitted tray which lifts out to give further storage below. There is a drawer in the base of the box with a recessed brass military style handle.
It is in good condition for its age and is strong and sturdy. There are some signs of age and use, some small knocks and surface marks here and there but nothing detrimental. There is an area of brass edging missing at the back of the box and a couple of other small losses but nothing untoward and overall it displays very well. The base of the drawer has been replaced at some point in its life and the interior is generally clean and tidy. The box has been cleaned and lightly polished to retain its patina and is ready for use.
