Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kyushu, historically characterised by an ivory-coloured, crackled earthenware glaze and intricate polychrome enamel and gilt decoration.

Authentic Satsuma items are traditionally crafted from clay, finished with a transparent crackle-patterned glaze, and hand-painted using mineral pigments enhanced with raised gold detailing known as moriage.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining the fineness of the hand-painted details, the presence of fine crazing in the glaze, artisan signatures or mon marks on the base, and the weight and composition of the earthenware body.

These decorative vessels can be displayed on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table as standalone statement pieces or incorporated into traditional and eclectic cabinet displays to add colour and historical texture.

Antique ceramics should be kept out of direct sunlight, dusted gently with a dry, soft cloth, and never immersed in water or treated with chemical cleaning agents to protect the delicate enamel and gilt surfaces.
