A fusee ships clock is a marine timekeeper utilising a conical pulley with a cord or chain to maintain even tension on the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring precise timekeeping, which became standard for navigation during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These clocks traditionally feature heavy cast brass or bronze cases designed to resist corrosion in marine environments, fitted with thick bevelled glass bezels and white enamel dials featuring Roman numerals.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy cast metal cases with patination, mechanical fusee or spring-driven movements requiring a winding key, and traditional hinged bezels with secure fastening latches.

A brass nautical clock can serve as a striking focal point on a plain wall, paired with dark wood furniture, leather accents, or neutral tones to highlight its metallic warmth and historical character.

The brass case should be dusted gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the natural ageing and patination, while the mechanical movement should be serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
