FAQs

Killarney ware refers to distinctive wooden souvenir items manufactured in County Kerry, Ireland, during the 19th century, typically characterised by intricate marquetry and local motifs.

Craftsmen primarily utilised native Irish timbers such as arbutus (strawberry tree), yew, walnut, and oak, often combining lighter and darker woods to create contrasting pictorial inlays.

Authentic pieces often feature characteristic local motifs such as shamrocks, ruins like Muckross Abbey, and detailed marquetry or micro-mosaic woodwork, frequently accompanied by distinct timber grains native to Ireland.

Displaying the item on a surface such as a side table or mantelpiece adds historic character, tactile warmth, and textural contrast to modern living spaces.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to protect the historic timber surface.
