Antique Southern European Baroque Reliquary Cabinet
Late 18th to Early 19th Century
An ornate and atmospheric small cabinet, profusely carved and likely of Southern European origin—most probably Spanish or Italian, though do see what you think. The exuberant Baroque and Rococo styling, with its scrolling foliage, shell motifs, and foliate mask, aligns far more closely with European ecclesiastical craftsmanship than with Kashmiri carving traditions. The overall feel, construction, and decorative vocabulary suggest a date in the late 18th or early 19th century.
Crafted in softwood—likely pine or poplar—the surface retains traces of original gesso and gilding, with a rich, aged patina. The recessed oval niche would have housed a devotional figure or relic, possibly for a domestic altar or small chapel.
Measures: 44 cm (width) x 19 cm (depth) x 35 cm (height).
Condition: Good overall, with wear and marks consistent with age. Old, fully treated woodworm to the back panel. The
... back feet have undergone glued repair, visible but stable.
