The break arch hood surmounted with three gilded ball finials, below canted stop fluted corners. The circular glass bound with a cast brass bezel. The hood sides with moulded circular glass viewing windows.
The moulded edge long trunk door with choice curled mahogany veneers, flanked by quarter turned reed columns terminating with wooden doric capitals.
The moulded edge panel to the base with shaped London style double plinth and pad feet.
The 12” circular silvered and engraved brass dial signed Barwise, London to the centre, with subsidiary calendar and seconds zones.
The fully restored eight-day duration movement is of the highest quality.
The plates are united by five knopped pillars, fine wheel work and anchor escapement, striking the hours on a single bell, with strike / strike silent facility.
The clock is complete with its original brass cased weights and heavy brass bob pendulum with gilded wooden rod, for temperature compensation and an engraved calibrated rating nut.
Finely fretted and cut blued steel hands.
An exceptional quality clock in excellent original condition with the movement expertly restored.
John Barwise 'Chronometer, Watch & Clock Makers to their Royal Highnesses the Dukes of York, Kent, Cumberland & Gloucester' 29 St Martin's Lane, London.
John Barwise was the son of a clockmaker from Cockermouth, he is recorded as working in London from circa 1790, becoming one of the finest makers of clocks, chronometers and watches of the early 19th century. In 1805 he was one of fifteen watchmakers elected by the Board of Longitude to adjudicate in the renowned dispute between Thomas Earnshaw and John Arnold.
John Barwise died in 1842, a fine table regulator by Barwise is in the Lord Harris Collection at Belmont, and further examples of his work are in the Royal collection and at the Guildhall Museum in London.
The movement is fully restored by our horologist who is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 50 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.
