8 Day Mahogany Longcase Clock With Early Painted Dial By John Douglass Of Chertsey. Circa 1780. (long Case) London Style

This is a particularly good and original example of an early white dial longcase clock in superb condition.
 
The eight day duration, five pillar movement has Anchor Recoil escapement and rack strikes the hours on a well-tuned, cast bell.
 
It has an uncomplicated and clear, 12'' wide, brake-arch painted iron dial with an off-white background. The corners and around the maker''s name to the arch having raised gilt decoration. The arch having the maker''s name of ''JNo. DOUGLASS'' (of) ''CHERTSEY'' in black capitals and the dial having a black circle encompassing outer Arabic five minutes, a minute ring and inner, Roman hour numerals. There is also a subsidiary seconds dial with Arabic tens and inner division ring. Below the centre hole is a drop-mouth calendar date aperture backed with a calendar disc with day ring and inner Arabic fives. The blued steel pierced hands are Serpentine style.
