Victorian glassware encompasses a wide variety of decorative styles influenced by the Gothic revival, classical motifs, and technological advancements in manufacturing during the 19th century. Pieces often featured ornate engraving, vibrant colours, and heavy ornamentation reflecting the periods aesthetic.

Glassware from this period was typically hand-blown using lead or soda-lime glass formulations, often incorporating metallic oxides to achieve rich colours such as green, ruby, and blue. Decoration was frequently applied via wheel-engraving, acid-etching, or enamelling by skilled artisans.

Authentication involves examining the pontil mark on the base, which indicates hand-blown manufacturing, as well as checking for minor surface irregularities, wear consistent with age, and the weight and clarity of the glass. Stylistic motifs and chemical composition tests can also help confirm the period.

Antique coloured glass can be integrated into modern settings by displaying them on open shelving, bar carts, or dining tables to add vibrant colour and historical texture. Pairing them with minimalist modern items creates a curated contrast that highlights their craftsmanship.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh scrubbing brushes or automatic dishwashers. Extreme temperature changes should be prevented to avoid thermal shock and potential cracking of fragile historical pieces.
