Antique 13.5" Mahogany Anglo Swiss Watch Co. Railway Station / School Round Dial Wall Clock (Timepiece)

1920 - 1940
Description

This is a good quality antique 13.5-inch station wall clock, by Anglo Swiss Watch Co., designed for use as a municipal / railway / station clock, housing a timepiece mechanism, circa 1930, with an ebonized mahogany case, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory and is now in good working order.

This 13.5-inch station wall clock houses a quality single brass barrel spring driven featuring a timepiece mechanism.  We believe the mechanism may be an English Smith’s mechanism due to its design but it is not stamped Smiths.  During this time, the Smith’s company was exporting English mechanisms to the British colonies, where they were cased locally.

This 13.5-inch station wall clock features a beautiful mahogany case, with a moulded brass bezel, a pendulum access door on the underside and a mechanism-viewing door on the left-hand side that allows you to view the mechanism whilst in operation.  There are four wooden pegs which secure the front of the clock to the case.  The mahogany case has been cleaned and wax polished by hand and it retains its original ebonised finish.  On the back of the clock is a bracket to attach the clock to the wall.

The movement has been restored and serviced and is now in good mechanical order, ensuring this clock is reliable and keeps good time. The pendulum, which is attached to the mechanism by accessing the clock from the door below, can be adjusted in length to allow you to regulate the clock speed. The 13.5-inch station wall clock comes with a key, which is used to wind the mechanism through the centre of the face dial.

This 13.5-inch station wall clock face retains the original ivory colour dial with black Roman numeral numbering and an elegant shaped hour and minute hand.  A hinged solid brass bezel houses the glass face that protects the tin dial and face whilst in operation.  The brass bezel opens on a right-hand hinge to allow you to adjust or set the time. There is a catch to the back of the clock that locks the brass bezel in place and stops it from accidentally swinging open.

Condition Report:

The painted tin dial is in original condition, therefore exhibiting wear and old use marks.  The mahogany case is in lovely condition having been wax polished, whilst retaining its original ebonised finish.  The brass-hinged bezel is in good working order, with some play to the hinge.  The bezel-locking latch is present and working and prevents the bezel from opening. The mechanism is original; it has been cleaned and serviced and is in good working order, keeping good time.

Dimensions:

External Diameter = 13½” / 34.5cm

Painted Dial Diameter = 10½” / 26.5cm

Depth = 5¾” / 14.5cm

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dial wall clock is a timepiece encased in a circular wooden surround, featuring a large, legible face originally designed for public and commercial spaces such as railway stations, offices, and schools during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These timepieces were typically constructed with turned solid wood surrounds, such as mahogany or oak, a brass bezel holding a clear glass lens, a painted metal or card dial, and a mechanical clock movement.

Authentic period examples often feature cast brass bezels with side hinges, hand-painted or printed maker inscriptions on the dial, hand-cut spade or poire clock hands, and aged wooden back-boxes showing historic mounting hardware.

Hang the clock as a focal piece on a hallway accent wall, above a hallway console table, or within an office study to introduce natural wood warmth and clean historic lines to modern architectural spaces.

Keep the wooden surround dust-free using a soft microfibre cloth, avoid placing the clock near direct heat sources that dry out timber, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a professional horologist every three to five years.
