FAQs

Delft pottery, or delftware, originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century, influenced heavily by imported Chinese porcelain traded by the Dutch East India Company. Local earthenware manufacturers developed a tin-glazed pottery technique that produced an opaque white surface mimicking Chinese porcelain, which they painted with cobalt blue motifs.

Antique Delftware is constructed from a local clay body, thrown or molded, then fired. The biscuit pottery is coated with a tin-oxide glaze that fires to an opaque white, providing a canvas for hand-painted cobalt blue designs before receiving a final protective clear lead glaze.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight irregularities, crazing in the glaze due to age, and often feature factory marks or painter ciphers on the base. The clay body beneath chips should show porous earthenware rather than modern vitrified porcelain.

These pieces function as striking focal points on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or console tables, contrasting cleanly against neutral modern backgrounds or complementing traditional schemes that embrace classic blue and white motifs.

Antique delftware should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent glaze crazing. Cleaning requires only a soft, dry cloth; water and liquid cleaners should be avoided to protect the porous historic earthenware body.
