Sold by: The World is Made of Glass Ltd.

This is a scarce Georgian, English double series opaque twist ratafia glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765. Ratafia was a thick cordial and was served in thin small glasses such as this one. Taller ale glasses are sometimes described erroneously as ratafias if they have thin conical bowls.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a thin funnel-shaped bowl measuring 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain save for vertical finger flute moulding to the lower half and sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of sixteen white enamel ''cotton'' strands wound around a central twist of two white enamel cords. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17.3 cm (6.9 inches) in height. There are no chips...
