Staffordshire pottery dog figures were immensely popular in Victorian England during the 19th century, produced mainly in the Staffordshire potteries as decorative mantelpiece ornaments for middle-class homes.

These figures were typically made from earthenware or ceramic, slip-cast or hand-modelled, then hand-painted with underglaze colours and finished with metallic lustre highlights before kiln firing.

Authentic pieces often feature crazing in the glaze, vent holes on the underside, hand-painted details with slight variations, and sometimes underglaze cobalt blue bases typical of the 19th-century manufacturing process.

They can be placed on mantelpieces, bookshelves, or side tables to add character, narrative, and historical contrast to contemporary or eclectic interior schemes.

Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent paint fading, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid using liquid cleaners or submersing them in water, especially if any historic repairs or gilt highlights are present.
