Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the mid-20th century, British clockmakers such as Elliott of London produced compact mantel and desk clocks combining traditional cabinetmaking techniques with modern mechanical movements. These timepieces were frequently retailed through established jewellers and became popular decorative additions to modern homes and offices.

Elliott clocks were constructed using hardwood cases veneered in fine timber cuts such as burr walnut, mahogany, or oak. The movements featured brass clockwork mechanism components, paired with solid brass bezels, glass crystal face covers, and silvered metal dials.

Authentic pieces feature dial inscriptions reading An Elliott Clock or Elliott London, often accompanied by the name of the original retailer. The reverse casing or movement plate is typically stamped with manufacturer markings, batch numbers, and mechanical trade identifiers.

Place the clock centrally on a stone mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or executive office desk to serve as a focal point. Pair it alongside framed monochrome prints, brass desk accessories, or books to balance the warmth of the burr walnut veneer.

Keep the wood casing clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. Avoid placement near direct heat sources or moisture, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
