Good Chippendale Period Tea Caddy

18th century
Description

A fine late 18th century Chippendale period TEA CADDY of good warm colour. It features beautifully figured “flame” mahogany panels to the front, side and the lid, with rosewood cross-banding and chequer string inlay to the leading edges. The lid is surmounted with it particularly well-cast ornate handle which is original.

It opens to reveal its original set of three individual wooden ‘canisters’ with sliding lids all of which are similarly veneered with flame mahogany panels and cross-banded with tulipwood. This is a very good 18th century George III period tea caddy of particularly good warm colour and patina. 25cms wide; 15cms high; 13cms deep. (9.75 x 6 x 5ins). English circa 1770

** The central canister was intended to be used for sugar (which had been ‘broken down’ into small irregular lumps) flanked by two smaller canisters: one for ‘Green Tea’ (China) and one for ‘Black Tea’ (India). Later caddies replaced the central canister with a glass bowl ~ also for sugar, and not for “mixing” tea as sometimes supposed.
